Supplies You Need For This Preschool Math Shape Game

• various colors of felt {or paper} to cut into shapes
• at least one large piece of felt to use as a background {you can also use paper}
• dice {1 or 2}
• scissors
• glue {optional}

How To Set Up THis Preschool Math Basic Shapes Game

Step 1

Cut out different shapes in various colors and sizes. You can have your child help with this {or at least try depending on his skill level}.

Step 2

Separate the shapes into piles.

Step 3

Place the large piece of felt down next to all of the sorted shapes. This is the background for the collage.

How To Play This Preschool Math Shape Counting Game

Have your child do the following:

1. Select a shape.
2. Roll a die.
3. Count the dots on the die.
4. Place that number of the chosen shape onto the large piece of felt {anywhere your child wants}.
5. Select another shape {or the same shape}, roll, and add shapes to the background.
6. Continue until you run out of shapes or your child considers the collage finished.
7. Take a picture of the completed work. {optional}
8. Remove the shapes and play again.

Our Experience With This Preschool Math Shape Game

My son has been enjoying math games lately especially if they involve dominoes, dice, or truffula trees. I wanted to create a new dice game that practiced shapes and allowed for a bit of creative expression.

I asked Aiden if he wanted to use paper shapes or felt shape. He chose felt. Here’s how to set this game up.

This was Aiden’s “finished” piece. He added the large green square on the right towards the end. Notice how it hangs off the background felt. {There are no rules to process based art.}

If you are using paper instead of felt, it might help to glue down the shapes as you add them. Felt sticks to felt so it’s less likely the shapes will move around. Paper is another story – especially as you add more and more shapes.
